In the midst of lockdown, the UK government changed the bank holiday that was to be held or enjoyed on the first Monday in May. The new day for the holiday will be on Friday 8 May. Not that I care particularly because everyday during lockdown has been like a day off. The reason for the change, however, is to coincide with VE Day. The VE stands for Victory in Europe and commemorates the end of the war.
I think we should change the name of VE Day to Victory over Deutschland Day or VD Day. It may be politically incorrect, but who cares? The UK is no longer in the European Union and there is no need to tiptoe around the feelings of our former bloc allies. We can then use the commemoration as a prophylactic against the disease of war generally and not a commemoration of one particular war.
I expect there will be some condomnation on this view, but a little bit of metaphorical latex could go a long way.

‘I’d die to spend VD day with her!’
