I was listening to the radio this morning. Chris Evans was talking about how Michael Gove had applied for membership in a private men’s club to which Boris Johnson belonged. Apparently, Gove’s application has been turned down because of his shenanigans (my word) during the recent Tory party leadership campaign.
But the best part of the story, according to Evans, was that at this particular club all waiting staff members are known as Charles regardless of whether their real names or not. This is to ensure that members do not feel embarrassed at not remembering someone’s name.
I like this policy and have decided to adopt a variation of it in my everyday life. From now on everyone will be Buddy, as in “Thanks, Buddy” or “What do you think, Buddy?”
However, I think this generic naming policy should be used in political circles, like the European Union. To ensure that leaders are not embarrassed by failing to remember all 27 of their colleagues’ name, I suggest that all EU leaders should be referred to as Angela. It could be a way of keeping Britain in the Union without looking like it is, after nearly 80 years, kowtowing too much to Germany.
What do you think, Buddy?

Now I definitely feel like somebuddy!
And you are, Buddy.
